1410 - Naturism

The terms "nudism" and "naturism" are frequently used interchangeably. And the differences between the two terms are not very cut-and-dry like the differences are between nudism and the other terms in the 1400 section. Honestly, at the end of the day, the differences between the two terms are up to the individual. But this is how we at Midwest Nudists view the two terms.

In the most cut-and-dry sense, whichever term is used depends on which set of organizational values between two different organizations someone or a venue / property / club follows. The following information has been paraphrased from the article below:

Nudism is typically overseen by the American Association for Nude Recreation (AANR). This is primarily a US-centric organization, which may explain why the term "naturism" is not as popular in the US as it is in Europe and Canada. The AANR has been the primary representing organization for private property owners of nudist venues and groups where nudity is expected when possible and clothing is only used when practical.

Naturism is typically overseen by The Naturist Society (TNS). This organization primarily represents public venues where nudity is optional, but not expected.

The article also cites a few examples of different values between nudists and naturists, such as the following (keep in mind these are not applicable for everyone, so it is important not to generalize / stereotype):

  • Nudists prefer nudity on private, enclosed properties whereas naturists prefer the wilderness / open settings
  • Nudists prefer that those around them are also nude whereas naturists lean more towards clothing-optional settings
  • Nudists have a more selective social circle than naturists
  • Nudists prefer a more conservative (strict) approach to rules / etiquette than naturists do
  • Nudists prefer more structured activities (such as venue-hosted ones) whereas naturists prefer to do their own activities

In the end, the definition of nudist and naturist will vary depending on whom you ask.
